When choosing a Self Defense product, you should know that the best, non-lethal choices are stun guns and tazer guns (or Tazer, Taser, Taser Gun). Both are super-effective in stopping an attack, and they each have unique stregnths.  While they are similar they function quite differently.

WHAT DO THEY DO?
Stun Guns and Tazers are designed to send a charge of high voltage, low amperage electricity into a person's body through the skin in order to disrupt their central nervous system. The electricity will affect the ability of a person to function while they loose complete control of the body.  Typically, the attacker will fall to the ground, immobilized.

While the stun gun stops there, the Tazer gun goes even further. In addition to the electricity, it uses something called Shaped Pulse Technology, which is a sophisticated pulse wave that initially uses a high voltage when it penetrate barriers such as clothing then introduces a series of lower voltage pulses that causes involuntary muscle contractions and a resulting sense of vertigo.

Stun Guns
A stun gun is a small, hand held device that comes in a variety of shapes, sizes and voltages. They range in size from a pack of cigarettes or tiny flashlight all the way up to a large item that is similar in size to an older portable phone.  Stun Guns range from 80,000 to 975,000 volts with about 1 amp of energy. Unless the attacker is made of stone, a stun gun will take them down immediately.  Stun Guns affect the victim's central nervous system. You have to hold the stun gun to the person for 3-7 seconds for it to work effectively. Just touching the person with it will drop them to the ground, though they will get back up. It needs a few seconds of electricity flowing to the body in order for them to work properly.

Stun Guns cost $20 to $100 dollars, depending on their voltage and come in many forms like flash-lights, and diisguised in items like cell phones, pens, and stun batons. Most are battery powered, though there are a few are , and plug into an electrical outlet to charge.

The Tazer Gun
The Tazer gun is the ultimate in non-lethal self defense.  Currently there are two consumer versions, the original is the M18, which has the shape of a standard .45 colt pistol. The second is the new consumer model- the C2- which is sleek, curved, and much smaller. It comes in a huge variety of colors, including pink and is marketed to women and consumers as a small, yet effective self defense product. Both versions use nitrogen propelled cartridges to fire two electronic probes at a speed of 135 feed per second into the body of an attacker.

The probes are attached to thin wire, and will penetrate up to 2 inches of clothing. The best distance to fire the tazer gun is 7-10 feet away.  While the tazer gun has an output of only 50,000 volts, the tazer gun also has higher amperage than a stun gun. It works so well because it shocks the victim for a 5 to 30 second cycle which will temporarily devastate the attackers central nervous system. The M-18 operates on a 5 second cycle, and the new C2 operates on a whopping 30 second cycle when you pull the trigger. That means you can drop the Taser after you shoot it and run for help, and it will still be shocking the attacker for the rest of the cycle.

Since the tazer gun requires can only load one cartridge at one time, it features a back-up feature that acts like a regular stun gun should you need its continued use. When held against the attacker with a pulled trigger, the electricity will flow between the two exposed contacts at the end of the tazer and the attacker's body. It is equally as effective as the probes.

Costs

The two products represent vastly differing ends of the price spectrum.  As the tazer gun has multiple uses and carries additional features like laser sighting, costs start at $299 and can be seen as high as $399.
